Rummy 500 is one of several variations of the popular card game, Rummy. It is referred to at times as Pinochle Rummy and 500 Rum. Play begins with the player sitting to the left of the dealer and then proceeds in a clockwise direction. Each individual has the choice of picking a card from either the stock or discard pile. If they choose from the discard pile, they must pick up every card on top of it.

Players have the choice of then adding the card they have chosen to a meld, or laying it off. The additional cards (those also picked up from the discarded pile) are added to the player’s hand, or to an existing meld. If an individual only picks up one card from the discard pile, they don’t have to make a play with it right away.

Each player, after drawing a card, will have the opportunity to either lay off a card or add it to a meld that already exists on the table before they discard their card. All laid off cards are placed on the table directly in front of the player they belong to.

Play is over as soon as a person gets rid of their last card or when there are no more cards in the stock pile and a player wishes to draw from it. Each player’s cards which have been placed on the table during the course of the game are then scored. All face cards (King, Queen and Jack) have a value of 10. An Ace is worth a 15 and sometimes 1 if it is included in the following sequence, 3, 2, A. All numbered cards are counted according to their face value. For example, a 7 of clubs would count as a 7. A winner isn’t always determined in this manner way. In one variation of the game, the winning player must be the first person to go out and also the first one to score 500. If an individual accumulates 500 points or more but is not the first player to go out (get rid of all of their cards), they don’t win, even if they have the highest score.
